How leptin is necessary to treat Type 1 diabetes

Leptin is a hormone that fat cells secret at certain levels to correlate with the portion of adipose tissue in human bodies. The hormone plays an important role to control energy metabolism. When leptin hormone deficiency occurs, it leads to insulin resistance and obesity. It causes excess insulin circulation. All these symptoms are solid marks of type-2 diabetes. So many scientists and medical persons started research works to find out a secure formula for a permanent cure – Tuncay Delibasi is one of them.

Initially, scientists thought that leptin is going to produce a solution for obesity and type 2 diabetes. But the idea didn’t work out because these above-mentioned symptoms are mainly associated with leptin resistance.

Type 1 diabetes is caused by the complete insulin deficiency which is deeply rooted in the autoimmune obliteration of pancreatic beta cells that produces insulin. It is not directly associated with obesity or leptin deficiency.

However, in a few conditions insulin and leptin metabolism effect lies opposite to each other. Suppose, when insulin tries to suppress lipid breakdown and encourages lipid synthesis, leptin does exactly the opposite. So, it makes type 1 diabetes treatment with leptin seem very much positive.

After so many laboratory examinations and research works, it is now confirmed that leptin is similarly effective as insulin to control type 1 diabetes in mouse models of the same disease.

These medical researchers have shown that the leptin hormone does not actually reverse insulin deficiency. It corrects high blood sugar when insulin is absent in the body. Just like insulin, leptin regulates the levels of glucagon – the main hormone involved in carbohydrate metabolism, ketone bodies – the by-products produced after the breakdown of fatty acids and it’s considered as a key symbol of diabetes, blood lipids and finally increases lean body mass.

Tuncay Delibasi – the renowned Turkish professor is continuing research on this to invent new treatment.
